Chapter 5 & 7 Flashcards
Muscles of facial expression
Orbicularis oris muscle location?
Surrounds mouth Action: Closes, compresses, and puckers lips
Risorius muscle?
Action: Pulls corner of the mouth laterally
Zygomaticus major muscle?
Origin: Zygomatic bone Insertion: Corner of the mouth Action: Elevates corner of the mouth
Which two muscles work together to raise the upper lip?
Levator labii superioris muscle (Medially) Zygomaticus minor muscle
Depressor anguli oris muscle?
–Origin: Lower border of the mandible
–Insertion: Corner of the mouth
–Action: Pulls corner downward (i.e. “sad face”)
Depressor labii inferioris muscle?
–Origin: Lower border of the mandible
–Insertion: Medial to the corner of the mouth
–Action: Pulls down on lower lip
Platysma Muscle?
Actually a neck muscle
–Origin: Fascia of the pectoralis & deltoid muscle
–Insertion: Corner of the mouth
–Action: Pulls down on the mouth (causes skin of neck to “wrinkle” during movement)
Mentallis Muscle?
–Origin: Mandible below lateral incisors
–Insertion: Skin of the chin
–Action: Pushes up the lower lip and wrinkles skin of the chin
Buccinator Muscle?
Also assists with mastication
–Origin: Pterygomandibular raphe
–Insertion: Mandible and maxilla
–Action: Tightens cheek wall; assists in chewing by keeping food in the mouth
Orbicularis oculi muscle?
Two portions?
–Two portions: orbital & palpebral
–Totally encircles eye
–Palpebral portion: found in eyelids
–Orbital portion: portion surrounding the eye
–Action: Closes the eyelids
Corrugator supercilii muscle?
–Origin: Superciliary ridge
–Insertion: Bridge of nose
–Action: Pulls eyebrows medially; vertical wrinkles between eyebrows
Procerus muscle?
–Origin: Nose
–Insertion: Skin medial to eyebrow
–Action: Moves eyebrows downward and medially; horizontal wrinkles of skin of the bridge of the nose
What is the major muscle of the scalp?
Epicranius or occiptofrontalis muscle composed of two muscles.
Major muscle of the scalp (epicranius) is composed of which two muscles?
–Frontalis muscle (anterior location)
§Origin: Frontal bone
Insertion: Aponeurosis, skin of the eyebrow
Covers the forehead
–Occipitalis muscle (posterior in location)
Origin: Occipital bone
Insertion: Aponeurosis
Action: Horizontal wrinkling of the forehead
The aponeurosis connects the two muscle groups over most of the superior surface of the cranium
What are the Four major muscles of mastication?
Temporalis muscle
Medial pterygoid muscle
Lateral pterygoid muscle
Masseter muscle
