Political era
1840s-1930s
Period when police were tied closely to politics and politicians, dependent on them for being hired, promoted, & assignments

Justice of peace (JP)
A minor justice official who oversees lesser criminal trials; one of the early english judicial functionaries
Reform era
1930-1980
Police sought to extricate themselves from the suckles of politicians, & leading to the crime fighter era
• greater emphases being placed of numbers of arrest, citations, resolve times, etc
Community era
1980-present
Police retrained to work with the community to solve problems by looking at their underlying causes and developing tailored responses to them
Interpol
The only international crime fighting organization, it collects intelligence information, issues alerts, and assists in capturing world criminals; it has nearly 200 member countries
Customs & border protection (CBP)
Largest federal law enforcement. Responsible for preventing terrorist & terrorists weapons from entering the U.S.
Immigration & customs enforcements (ICE)
Largest investigation arm. Responsible for identifying & shutting be down vulnerabilities both in nations borders & in economic, transportation, & infrastructure security
Transportation security administration TSA
Protects the nations transportation systems. agents also inspect air carrier operations to the US, Assess security of airports overseas, fly air marshal missions, and train overseas security personnel
Coast Guard
Protect the public, the environment, and the US economic interests and the nation ports
Secret service
Protect the president and other high-level officials and investigates counterfeiting and other financial crimes.
