Chapter 5 Flashcards
What is a vacuum?
A space that is completely empty of everything including Air.
How does sound transfer energy?
sound transfers energy from a SOURCE such as a drum to a DETECTOR such as your EAR.
What does sound travel through?
sound needs a material or a MEDIUM, to travel through, such as Air, water or walls.
Can you hear sound underwater?
yes, Animals such as dolphins and whales communicate over large distances by making and hearing sounds.
What is a sound wave?
Sound waves arevibrationsof air molecules
How does sound wave move through air?
The layer of air next to a loudspeaker vibrates, which makes
the next layer of air molecules vibrate, and so on.
What is compression?
A compression is a region of higher density i.e. a place where the molecules are bunched together
What is a rarefraction?
rarefaction is a region of lower density i.e. a place where the molecules are spread out
Describe the speed of sound.
Sound waves travel at different speeds in solids liquids and gases. They travel the fastest in solids and slowest in gases. This is because the particles in solids are closer together than they are in a gas so the vibration is passed on more quickly.
What are the two types of waves a slinky can make?
Longitudinal waves and transverse waves.
What is a transverse wave?
What is a longitudinal wave?
What is noise?
