Why do unions exist?
economic: efficiency, equity, wealth distribution
political: provide a voice for employees, the balance of power

Union philosophies
Unions must have, collective bargaining and be independent of the employer
Craft or occupational unionism
unions that typically allow memberships that are in the same trade or occupation or same family of skills
business unionism
economic gain through collective bargaining
non-collective bargaining activities
activities related to promoting the occupation
Industrial multi-skill union
represents a multitude of workers with different range of skills
objectives goes beyond collective bargaining, Unifor, United food and commercial workers
Public sector or social justice unionism
public sector employees at three levels of government
typically advocates for social justice (CUPE OPSEU)

pluralist in nature
independent or enterprise union
limited political and social objective
Union affiliation
can be international, national and local to lobby people and achieve greater agenda

why is union democracy, people
- give employees a voice
- democracy makes them more effective
- increases members identification
- helps identify future leaders
Why join unions ?
collective voice: addresses dissatisfaction, increases employee representation, gives employees a voice
utility: employees will join a union if they help with their economic gains
Ideology: unions who have positive attitude towards unions are more likely to join
why do ppl leave
- usually when it is a requirement to join
- dissatisfaction with compensation
- failure for union to provide distributive justice
