Inferior
Closer to the head than another structure (usually synonymous with superior).
Cephalic
Closer to the tail than another structure (usually synonymous with inferior).
Caudal
The front of the body.
Anterior
The back of the body.
Posterior
Towards the belly (synonymous with anterior).
Ventral
Towards the back (synonymous with posterior).
Dorsal
Closer to the point of attachment to the body than another structure.
Proximal
Farther to the point of attachment to the body than another structure.
Distal
Away from the midline of the body.
Lateral
Toward the midline of the body.
Medial
Toward or on the surface.
Superficial
Away from the surface, internal.
Deep
Separates the front (anterior) and back (posterior) of the body.
Frontal Plane / Coronal Plane
Separates the left and right sides of the body.
Sagittal Plane
Separates the upper (superior) and lower (inferior) halves of the body.
Transverse Plane / Axial Plane
A sagittal plane that perfectly divides the body down the midline.
Median Plane
Cavity in the back of the body.
Dorsal Cavity
Cavity in the front of the body.
Ventral Cavity
Cavity that consists of the brain.
Cranial Cavity
Cavity that consists of the spinal cord.
Spinal Cavity
Thoracic cavity that consists of the lungs.
Pleural Cavities
Thoracic cavity that consists of the trachea and esophagus.
Mediastinum
Thoracic cavity that consists of the heart and great vessels.
Pericardial Cavity
Abdominopelvic cavity that consists of the liver, stomach, pancreas, and intestine,

Abdominopelvic cavity that consists of the bladder and reproductive organs.
Pelvic
A single plane through the anterior-posterior midline divides the animal into mirror-image halves.
