Community Service
The work that one is required to perform for repaying his/her debt to society after being found at fault for committing a criminal or deviant offense. In most cases community service is ordered by the sentencing judge and supervised by a community supervision officer
Detoxification
The use of medical drugs to ease the process of overcoming the physical symptoms of dependence that make the detoxification process so painful for the addicted substance abuser
Gaols
A term used in England during the Middle Ages that was synonymous with today’s jail
Jail
A confinement facility, usually operated and controlled by county-level law enforcement, that is designed to hold persons charged with a crime who are either awaiting adjudication or serving a short sentence of one year of less after the point of adjudication
Jail Reentry Programs
Programs usually interlaced with probation and parole agencies as a means of integrating the supervisory functions of both the jail and community supervision agencies. The continued care of the offender’s specific needs is addressed and can include everything from referral to counseling to drug treatment, depending on the needs of the offender
Podular Jail
Includes rounded or “podular” architecture for living units and allows for direct, as opposed to indirect, supervision of inmates by security staff
Rural Jail
Usually small jails in rural country jurisdictions that are often challenged with tight budgets and limited training for staff
Sally Port
Entry design that allows security staff to bring vehicles close to the admissions area in a secure fasion
Shock Incarceration
A short period of incarceration followed by a specified term of community supervision in hopes of deterring the offender from recidivating
Short-Term Jail
Facilities that hold sentenced inmates for no more than one year
Tower of London
One of the earliest examples of a jail used for confinement purposed; was constructed after 1066 A.D. under the reign of King William I of England
Weekend Confinement
Confinement that is restricted to the weekend or other times when the person in custody is off from work. This can be likened to serving a sentence on an installment plan, whereby other aspects of life that keep the person functional in society are not impaired but the offender is required to pay for his/her crime through a series of small stints in jail
