Prison

Rhodes v Chapman
Questioned the constitutionality of double-celling prison inmates in Ohio at a maximum facility prison. It was ruled by a 8 to 1 majority that double celling was not unconstitutional and not cruel and unusual punishment.
War on drugs under Reagan
Reagan initiative to reduce availability and dependence of illicit drugs through interdiction, criminal sanctions, and treatment. As a result, this caused severe prison overcrowding and imprisonment of low-level offenders and users.
Street Crimes
Street crimes are crimes such as vandalism, car theft, and mugging that are usually committed outdoors.
Federalized
To form into a single centralized unit; unite in a federal union.
Three Penitentiary Act
1891 act of Congress that authorized the construction of the first three federal prisons.
FBOP
Federal Bureau of Prisons
Sanford Bates
first director of the U.S. Bureau of Prisons and was appointed by President Hoover. He was also considered the father of modern penology.
What is ICE?
Immigration and Customs Enforcement and is responsible for housing illegal immigrants who are pending deportation.
Brig
Military facilities on ships made to hold violators of military law as a way of temporary confinement.
Private Prison
Any secure correctional facility operated by a private company, usually for profit, and contracts with government to provide housing, security, etc.
