Ethics
Rules or standards of behavior to which members of an occupation, profession, or other organization are expected to conform.
Power of attorney
A document that authorizes another to act as one’s agent or attorney.
Sanctions
Penalty imposed for unacceptable conduct.
Integrated bar association
A state bar association to which an attorney must belong in order to practice law in the state.
Letter of nonengagement
A letter sent to a prospective client explicitly stating that the law office will not be representing him or her.
Time-barred
Prevents from bringing a civil or criminal action due to a specific period of time being passed without action being commenced.
Retainer
The act of hiring or engaging the services of someone.
Bundled legal services
All tasks needed to represent a client.
Unbundled legal services
Discrete task representation for which the client is charged per task as opposed to paying a single fee for all tasks to be performed.
Collaborative law
If the two parties that attorneys are representing cannot settle their dispute, then the attorneys will refuse to continue representing them anymore.
