Who were the Acadians? Where is Acadia located today?
They were early French settlers who lived in present day New Brunswick/Nova Scotia.
Describe what happened in The Great Deportation.
The British wanted Acadia for military purposes and wanted to take it from the Acadians. The Acadians refused to sign the Oath of Allegiance so the British deported them.
What were the Oath of Neutrality and the Oath of Allegiance?
Oath of Neutrality: Acadians must not side with the French in the event of war against British.
Oath of Allegiance: Acadians must fight against the French and be on the British side.
What is assimilation?
To become more integrated into a different culture.
Who was fighting over what during the Seven Years War?
Britain and France were fighting for world domination.
What was the outcome of the Seven Years War? Who won? Who lost?
Britain won the war and France lost.
What were some challenges that the British faced after they had gained Quebec back from the French?
They had to keep the French Canadiens and FN under their rule, but also prevent rebellions.
Describe some examples of challenges that the British conquest of North America posed for Canadiens and for the First Nations.
The Canadiens and FN were forced to assimilate and follow British, and could not practice their religion or keep their culture.
The Royal Proclamation helped the British establish control. Describe what ways they tried to gain control of the French settlers and what they did for the First Nations.
They established British laws and prohibited Catholics to be in government. They allowed the FN to keep their land and promised no one would take their land.
Why was the Quebec Act formed eventually?
The British feared a rebellion from the Canadiens and wanted to keep them happy.
What was one key change that The Quebec Act introduced for the First Nations?
They lost their land and no longer were promised a boundary that no one could cross.
