What are signs and symptoms of hypoxemia?

What is hypoxemia?
Lack of oxygen in the blood
What can a CNA do to help a resident with hypoxemia?
Raise the HOB
Decrease chatting
Ask yes/no questions
What is a pulse oximeter?
Measures the amount of oxygen in the blood
What is the good amount of oxygen in blood?
94-99
Anything below 90 is very poor
90-93 is poor
What are signs and symptoms of respiratory distress?
SOB soft gaps taken in between words Orthostatic hypotension (dizziness from standing or sitting to fast) Cyanosis Cool/clammy skin Nose flairs Decrease in activity Coughing Increase in heart rate Respirations below 12 or above 20
What can a CNA do to help resident with respiratory distress?
Raise HOB Alternate periods of rest and activity Yes/no questions Encourage protein Force fluids unless with CHF pt Vital signs Increase ADLs Give tender love and care
What is COPD?
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Same as emphysema
What is pneumonia?
Infection in the lungs
What is aspiration pneumonia?
Swallowing down the wrong way and goes into lungs
How van aspiration pneumonia be prevented?
Sitting up as high as possible
Laying on side
What are signs and symptoms of pneumonia?
Tired
Coughing
Fever
What should the CNA do with a resident with pneumonia?
Elevate HOB ask yes/no questions Alternate periods of rest and activity V.s. (Temp) FF increase or encourage protein
What is the function of the lymphatic system?
Drain extra fluid from the tissues
Fight infection
Absorbs and transports fats
What is PVD?
Peripheral vascular disease, a decrease in circulation to the legs, from a build up of cholesterol in the groin
