What is ecchymosis?
A bruise
What is a hematoma?
Swelling under the skin, blood vessel breaks
What are signs and symptoms of melanoma?
Irregular coloring and shape
How are pressure sores caused?
Poor nutrition Elderly Over weight Immobile Poor circulation Hard surface Fragile skin Very thin person Incontinent Dehydrated Edema
What can you do as a CNA to prevent pressure sores?
Check skin every 2 hours Change and position every two hours Wash and dry in between changing Apply lotion Increase protein Force fluids Notify nurse Tell next shift during change in shift
What is shearing?
When layers of the skin rub against each other, skin rips, top layer comes off
How do you as a CNA take care of a skin tear?
Tell nurse, stop bleeding, clean with soap and water, file an incident report
What are thermal burns?
Burns from the water
What are electrical burns?
Burns from an outlet, or electrical wire
What is a chemical burn?
Ate/drank something bad
What is a 1st degree burn?
Red, hurting skin, treated with cold water
What is a 2nd degree burn?
Red, blister, more pain that 1st degree
Treated with lotion, cold water, if size of pal, must go to ER
