inability to adapt to adversity; usually follows one or more adverse events, leading to decreased resistance and resilience

stimulus initiating stres response
Psychological stressors
feeling of loss of personal control or powerlessness (death of a loved one)

family, financial, career concerns
New born and infant
stress relief: feeding, touch, comfort, and protection provided by others
Toddler and preschooler
minor stressors can feel major; parents assist with learning to deal with delay in gratification
School aged child and adolescent
younger children: use cognitive abilities, motor skills, emotional status, social abilities, and feelings of self-worth to cope with stressful situations
Adolescents: rationalize events and use emotion focused coping mechanisms and problem solving
Adult and older adult
process of neurogenesis declines significantly; existing stress inhabits neurogenesis, contributing to depression
