Loperamide (indications)
traveler’s diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome associated with chronic diarrhea
Loperamide (assessments)
Assess for abdominal pain, constipation, drowsiness, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting
to be resolved
Loperamide (pt teaching)
may cause dizziness or
drowsiness and should be used with caution
drink 2 to 3 quarts of fluid daily as
prevention for fluid loss.
Avoid highly spiced or “laxative” foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables

Diarrhea is the frequent liquid or semiliquid stools excretion as result of increased bowel motility

fluids and electrolytes, diphenoxylate with atropine or Lomotil, paregoric, loperamide

Having a heathy diet rich in fiber and fluids will help avoid the medication.
