Chapter 37: PUD and GERD Flashcards
Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD)
characterized by GI mucosa that is exposed to gastric acid and pepsin.
It is an infection of H. pylori and excessive use of NSAIDs
When smooth muscle heals, however, scar tissue remains and the mucosa that regenerates to cover the scarred muscle tissue may be defective
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
most common disorder of the esophagus.
Is a chronic disease characterized by bile refluxes in the esophagus
main cause is the lower esophageal sphincter which normally is contracted or closed and prevents the reflux of gastric contents
Proton pump inhibitor (what)
inhibits secretion of gastric acid
Proton pump inhibitor (why)
Improves healing of gastric acid related diseases
Proton pump inhibitors (indications)
PUD and GERD
Lower doses can prevent the recurrence of esophagitis, maintain symptom relief, and heal esophagitis
Proton pump inhibitors (contraindications)
hypersensitivity to omeprazole
Proton pump inhibitor (assessment)
assess for decreased epigastric pain with gastric and duodenal ulcers and also assess for decreased heartburn with GERDs.
As for adverse effects assess
for presence of headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting
