Chapter 4 (vocabulary) Flashcards
Aqueous Solution
Solutions in which water is the dissolving medium
Solvent
Components of the solution this is present in the greatest quantity
Solutes
Other components of a solution
Electrolyte
Substance whose aqueous solution contains ions
Non electrolyte
Any substance that forms a solution containing no ions
Strong electrolyte
Electrolytes that are present in a solution entirely as ions
Weak electrolytes
Electrolytes that are present partly as ions and partly as molecules
Solvation
The interaction of ions with polar solvent molecules
Chemical equilibrium
The relative number of each type of ion or molecule in the reaction are constant over time
Precipitation reaction
Reaction that results in the formation of an insoluble product
Precipitate
Insoluble solid formed by a reaction in a solution
Solubility
I’d the amount that dissolves in a given quantity of solvent
Exchange reaction
Cations and anions appear to exchange partners
Molecular equation
Shows complete chemical formula and shows without indication ionic character
Complete ionic equation
Equation written with all soluble strong electrolytes shown as ions
Spectator ions
Ions that appear in identical forms in both sides of a complete ionic equation
Net ionic equation
Includes only the ions and molecules directly involved
Acids
Substances that ionize in aqueous solutions to form hydrogen ions
Bases
Substances that accept (react) with hydrogen ions
Strong acids/strong bases
Strong electrolytes (completely ionized)
Weak acids/bases
Weak electrolytes (partially ionized)
Neutralization reaction
Solution of an acid and base are mixed
Salt
Any ionic compound whose cation comes from a base and anion who comes from an acid
Oxidation
Loss of electrons by a substance
