Define a trip/journey
One way movement from origin to destination
Differentiate between home-based and non-home-based trip
HB - This is one where the home of the trip maker is either the origin or the destination of the journey.
NHB - neither end of the trip is the home of
the traveller.
Define trip production
home end of HB trip or origin of NHB trip
Define trip attraction
non-home end of HB trip or destination of NHB trip
Why do we need to distinguish between different journey characteristics?
better understanding of travel and trip generation models can be obtained if journeys by different characteristics are identified and modelled separately
List journey characteristics:
- By purpose - work, school, shopping, recreation
- By Time of day - peak and off-peak, complicated by tours
- By Person Type
- income level;
- car ownership;
- household size and structure.
Factors affecting personal trip production:
- Income
- Car ownership
- Family size
- Household structure
- Value of land
- Residential density
- Accessibility
Factors affecting personal trip attraction:
- Space available for industrial, commercial / other services
- zonal employment
Factors affecting freight trip productions & attractions:
- Number of employees
- Number of sales
- Roofed area of firm
- Total area of firm
- Type of firm?
- Impact of online shopping / e‐groceries?
