Chapter 4 The Living World Flashcards
Ecology
The branch of biology that deals with the relations of organisms
Intraspecific
Organisms in the same species
K species
Generalist species, live in broad niches
R species
Specialist species, live in narrow niches and are sensitive to environmental changes
Amensalism
The interaction between two species whereby one species suffers and the other is not affected. EX: black walnut tree released a chemical that kills plants
Commensalism
Two species whereby one benefits and the other is not affected. EX: using another organism for transportation
Benthos (biomes)
Bottom of oceans. No sunlight, therefore no plant life.
Coastal zones (biomes)
Includes warm, clear, shallow ocean habitats near land.
20% of all land mass
Deserts
Found in areas too dry for forests but too wet for deserts. Temperatures are moderate.
Grasslands
Intertidal
Area of the shoreline exposed to water during high tide and air during low tide.
Savannas (biomes)
Warm year around. Scattered trees. Kind dry season followed by a rainy season.
Photosynthesis
Plants remove cabin from the air
Primary producers are
Autotrophs (plants)
Primary consumers
Heterotrophs ( herbivores- plant eaters)
