Chapter 4: The Integumentary System Flashcards
1
Q
Skin
A
- Dry body membrane exposed to air.
- Also called cutaneous membrane
2
Q
Integumentary System
A
- Skin and accessory organs
- Literally means covering
3
Q
Functions of Integumentary System
A
- Protects deeper tissue from mechanical damage (bumps)
- Chemical damage (acids/bases)
- Microbe damage
- UV radiation
- Thermal (Heat/Cold)
6.Temperature regulation - Aids in secretion of urea and uric acid
- Synthesizes vitamin D
4
Q
Epidermis
A
- Outer layer of the skin
- Made up of stratified squamous epithelium.
- Avascular-no blood supply of its own.
5
Q
Dermis
A
- Deep layer of skin
- Composed of irregular dense connective tissue.
6
Q
How Blisters form
A
- Epidermis and Dermis are closely fitted together.
- Burn or friction may cause them to separate, allowing interstitial fluid to accumulate between the layers.
7
Q
Subcutaneous
A
1.Below the skin
2. Shock absorber and insulates the deeper tissues from extreme temp change outside body.
8
Q
Hypodermis
A
- Adipose tissue beneath the skin.
- Not considered part of the skin, but anchors skin to underlying organs and provides site for nutrient storage.
9
Q
Keratinocytes
A
- Keratin-producing cells of the epidermis
10
Q
Keratin
A
- Tough insoluable protien found in tissues such as hair, nails, and epidermis of the skin.
