The 9 Essentials for Children?
- Introduction
- Identifying the children
- Planning the lesson
- Presenting information
- Demonstrating
- Practising
- Movement analysis
- Correction and feedback
- Lesson summary
(1) Introduction Explained?
Names are key - use THEIRs and YOURs.
(2) Identifying the Children Explained?
Find, out their interests, goals and determine their development level.
(3) Planning the Lesson Explained?
Learning Through Play (CEP): Cognitive Play (problem solving) Social Play (role playing) Physical Play (challenge and testing)
(4) Presenting Information Explained?
What will you be teaching?
- eg. first timer, today we will learn how to stop.
Why are you teaching this?
- eg. because we want to avoid hurting ourselves and we want to explore more of the mountain.
How are they going to attempt it?
- eg. we are going to spend some time here on the flatter area and practice a side-slip.
(5) Demonstrating Explained?
Demonstrate correctly and often. Kids learn best by seeing, not listening. Adapt technique to match kids and the physical distances.
(6) Practising Explained?
Repetition is important. Very the games and images used to teach to help consolidate their skills.
(7) Movement Analysis Explained?
Avoid lengthy one-on-one explanations. Examine the 4 skills of snowboarding.
- STANCE
- ROTARY
- EDGING
- PRESSURE
(8) Correction & Feedback Explained?
Common Corrective Exercises and Analogies:
Balance/Stance (Beginner):
- Ride very low, then very tall (tall as a mouse, small as a house).
Rotary (Beginner):
- Falling leaf (like a plane)
Edging (Beginner):
- Edge sets toe side (Michael Jackson)
Pressure Control (Beginner): - Counting throughout the turns (can you move as slow as me?)
(9) Summary Explained?
Make sure all the children leave with a smile on their face.
