Chapter 3 - Technical Concepts (Up to the end of 3.1) Flashcards
What are the FOUR basic snowboarding skills + definitions?
STANCE - the way you stand on your board.
ROTARY - the way you turn your body and board.
EDGING - the way you tip the snowboard on edge.
PRESSURE CONTROL - the ability to manage pressure to make turns and deal with changes in terrain and snow conditions to maintain balance.
T.A.D Principle, to help blend the key snowboard skills is?
TIMING - when to initiate and complete the movements
AMOUNT - the amount of movement made
DURATION - how long the movements are made for
4 planes of movement encompassing the rider’s stance?
VERTICAL - up and down
CENTERED, FORE & AFT - middle, nose, and tail
LATERAL - heal edge/ toe edge
ROTATIONAL - anticipation
4 keys to a correct stance?
- Balance
- Lower back natural
- Horizontal eyeline
- Arms away from the body
Phases of a turn + explanations?
INITIATION - establishes the steering angle.
EXECUTION/MIDDLE - flexion of ankles, knees and hips to guide you in the direction of choice.
COMPLETION - flexed joints, shape is the important factor.
TRANSITION/PREPARATION - beginners’ skills aren’t yet blended and they will be static (preparation phase). As rider develops, reduces static between turns and becomes transition phase.
OPEN vs CLOSED turns explanation?
CLOSED TURNS - completed with snowboard across fall line, allows beginners to control speed.
OPEN TURNS - nose of board still maintains an angle down the fall line, can maintain constant speed.
5 Types of Turns + Explanations?
SKIDDED TURNS - inexperienced riders sliding sideways rather than arching.
RAILED TURNS - board tilted and locked onto edge for turn duration with zero skidding.
STEERED TURNS - Blending all 4 skills for smooth, round turns, path in snow wider than the board.
CARVED TURNS - more speed, edge angle and stronger edge hold.
PURE CARVED TURNS - tail follows exact path of the nose, leaving narrow groove in snow with zero skidding.
