Chapter 4 (Stoichiometry Of Chemical Reactions) Flashcards
What is a Chemical Reaction?
A process in which one or more substances are converted in one or more DIFFERENT substances.
What is a Chemical Equation?
A representation of what happens in a chemical reaction.
What is a Precipitation Reaction?
A type of reaction in which two SOLUBLE ionic compounds react to form an INSOLUBLE PRODUCT.
What is an Acid?
A substance which increases in concentration of H+ in an aqueous solution. (Acids which totally dissociate, or ionize, when dissolved in water are called strong acids. If they only ionize to a small extent they are referred as weak acids).
What are Bases?
Substances which increase the OH- concentration in an aqueous solution. (Strong bases are metal hydroxides, because they dissociate into their component ions when dissolved in water. Weak bases are apart of the ammonia family, and produce small amounts of OH- ions in water).
What happens when an Acid and Base solution are combined?
A special Double- Displacement reaction, called an Acid- base (or neutralization) reaction takes place.
Results are water (normally) and a SALT.
What is SALT, usually results from Acid-base reaction/ neutralization reaction?
(Not NaCl.)
An ionic compound composed of a cation from a base and an anion from an acid.
What is Oxidation?
Loss of electrons.
What is Reduction?
Gain of electrons.
