Groups in society

A

Primary group- (family, work groups) defined by intimate face to face relationships, cooperate to be successful, longing and self esteem from these groups.
Secondary group- (classrooms, teams) typically larger, more anonymous, and temporary.
In groups- (family, religion) ones we feel loyal to. Based on ethnocentrism which leads to xenophobia (fear of outsiders) we all belong to in groups.
Out groups- (religion, immigrants) ones we feel antagonistic to
Reference groups- (other professors) determines how we evaluate ourselves, shows us how to act, power to influence our behaviours.
Might be voluntary, or involuntary

  • Family is an early crucial socialization agent. Views on religion, education, politics, raising children.
    1950’s monolothic bias. Unrealistic image of idealized families. We have pervasive media, and Internet communities.
  • Religion. Canada is becoming a more secularized society. Socializing children, and then Pascal’s wager so old people go.
