Chapter 4: RAM Flashcards
How does DRAM Function?
Like an electronic spreadsheet filled with rows and columns that are made up of 1s and 0s
How would you refer to RAM that has 8 bit wide data or 16 bit wide data
x8 and x16
What solved the problem of DRAM taking up too much space on the motherboard?
DIMM sticks also older ones are SIMM
What sizes do modern DRAM sticks come in?
x32 and x64
What is SDRAM and what stick did it come with
Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory syncs up with the system clock, Dual inline memory module
What is SODIMM
Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Module
What is the nomenclature for SDRAM that is tied to a 100Mhz frontside bus?
PC100 or higher
What is RDRAM
Rambus Dynamic Random Access Memory developed by a company for the Pentium chip. a bit faster
What is DDR SDRAM
Double data rate was able to send 2 request for every tick of the clock.
What is the clock speed in relation to the DDR speed in relation to the PC rated speed
The DDR rating is double the clock and the PC rating is 8 times the DDR rating
What changed from DDR to DDR2 RAM?
How is it measured?
The I/O speeds doubled. The ram speed stayed the same but DDR2 doubles the speed from DDR
x2 x2 x8
What changed from DDR2 to DDR3?
How is it measured?
The RAM buffer was doubled from 4MB to 8MB doubling the speed yet again also supports up to 16GB memory modules supporting more ram overall
x4 x2 x8
What speed rating does DDR4 use that is different from the bit rate speed of old?
Megatransfers/second
What changed from DDR3 to DDR4
How is it measured?
Faster overall and supports theoretically 512GB modules. take the clock speed and multiply by 8 to get the megatransfers/second then multiply that by 8 to get the PC rating
x8 (to get MT/s and DDR rating) x8 (get PC rating)
How many pins on DDR2 stick?
SODIMM?
240
200
How many pins on DDR3 stick?
SODIMM?
240
204
How many pins on DDR4 stick?
SODIMM?
288
260
What is the difference between double sided DIMMs and Single Sided DIMMs?
one has chips on both sides and the other has chips only on one side.
What is RAM latency called?
Column Array Strobe (CAS) Latency
When does RAM latency happen and what is it comparable to?
When the mcc request data and after the ram sends out data. Comparable to the RAM standing up off the couch then sitting back down.
What RAM provides parity
Parity RAM provides an extra bit to check to make sure everything is legit.
What is the better ram that provides parity
Error Correcting Code RAM corrects on the fly if an anomaly is detected
What is registered and buffered ram?
Ram that provides a thin layer between the DIMM and the memory controller to reduce electrical faults
What is Virtual Ram
Ram space allotted on the HDD page file (very slow) if you want to use an application that is currently on the page file it will have to swap out with another application on the ram in order for it to run.
What are the minimum system requirements for RAM on windows x32 and x64
1GB and 2GB
What is Ready Boost
Ready Boost provides flash drives as the Virtual RAM which is much faster than traditional mechanical HDDs
What chip stores all the information about the ram stick
the SPD chip
What is the name for when the pc BSOD
Non maskable interrupt
