What 3 Components make up a modern computer?
Hardware, Operating System, Applications
What does the operating system enable you to do?
Enables the end user to control the hardware to tell it what to do.
What is the difference between a UI and a GUI?
A UI enables the user to control the hardware by typing in commands and a GUI allows the user to control the hardware by adding graphics the user can interact with.
What are applications?
Applications allow the user to do specialized tasks.
What is the computing process?
Input –> Processing –> Output
Input devices?
Keyboard, mouse
Processing devices?
CPU and GPU along with auxiliary supporting devices such as ram
Output devices?
Display, speakers
Data storage?
Takes volatile data stored in ram and puts the data onto a more permanent medium such as a HDD
Network Connection?
Mode in which computers connect to other computers
What are the common OS functions?
- Provides a method for applications to communicate with hardware (bit version of hardware determines the OS that can be supported)
- Creates a UI which is a visual representation of the computer for the end user to use
- Run, use, and shutdown programs
- Add, move, and install programs
- Provides a means to secure the system from threats
What are compatibility concerns
Whether an application can run on that OS or an OS can run on a piece of hardware etc…
