Chapter 4 - Organising Animals And Plants Flashcards
Blood plasma
- Liquid part of blood, a pale yellow colour
- plasma transports many dissolved substances around the body
Red blood cells
- very small in size, most common, give blood its red colour, they are shaped like discs, doesn’t have a nucleus
- to transport oxygen to all the body cells for respiration
White blood cells
- much bigger then red blood cells, they have a nucleus
- some white blood cells (lymphocytes) form antibodies against microorganisms
Platelets
- small fragments of cells, doesn’t have a nucleus
- help to form blood clots to seal wounds, they are formed when large cells break down into smaller pieces
Arteries
- Thick, muscular, elastic wall with a narrow lumen
- they carry blood away from the heart, blood is under very high pressure, carry oxygenated blood
Vein
- thin wall with a large lumen
- carry blood to heart, blood is under low pressure, carry deoxygenated blood
Capillaries
- wall is one cell thick with a very small lumen
- tiny blood vessels, allow the exchange of substances
Stent
A tube that is put in the artery to allow blood to go through it
Pacemaker
They are electrical devices to correct irregularities in the heart rate
Statins
They work to lower the level of chlorestrial in your blood
