Folic acid
Crucial for neurologic development and the prevention of fetal neural tube detects
•600 mcg daily
Recommended weight gain
11.3 to 15.9 kg (25 to 35 lbs)
(1 to 4.4 lbs düng the first trimester and 1 lb per week for the last two trimesters)
Increase calories
340 calories a day for second trimester
452 calories a day for third trimester
Breast feeding clients should add 450 to 50 calories a day
Calcium
1000 mg a day
High Ca foods: milk, calcium fortified soy milk, fortified orange juice, nuts, legumes and dark green leafy vegetables
8 to 10 glasses of fluid recommended daily (water and milk)
Limit caffeine. NO MORE THAN 200mg a day
Iron
High iron foods: beef liver, red meats, fish, poultry, dried peas and beans, fortified cereals and breads
• milk and caffeine interfere with absorption of iron supplements
Stool softener might be needed to decrease constipation
