Chapter 4 Motor functions Flashcards
Brain structures involved in motor control
SUBCORTICAL REGIONS:
-Cerebellum
What are the three main divisions of cerebellum?
-vestibulocerebellum
-spinocerebellum
-cerebrocerebellum
Basal ganglia
A complex collection of subcortical nuclei:
-caudate nucleus
-putamen
-nucleus accumbens
-globus pallidus
-substantia nigra
-subthalamic nucleus
What are the four parallel loops between the basal ganglia, thalamus, and cortex
- A limbic (emotional)
-an associative (cognitive)
-a sensory
-a motor
Theories of the motor functions provided by basal ganglia
Functions of the Cortical Regions
- Major role is the planning and guiding of skilled movements and those that require linking sensory inputs with motor inputs
-Supports a range of motor abilities:
-picking an object
-using a tool
-producing a gesture in response of verbal command
-moving the eyes to explore the image of a face
-controlling the body as we move around the environment
Primary motor cortex
Supplementary motor cortex and Premotor areas
coarticulation
Premotor regions
-
What is the difference between premotor cortex and primary cortex?
What are the two distinct devisions of the premotor cortex?
Mirror neurons
