Colonies
A colony is a country ruled by a larger one. Colonies in the British Empire, for example, were ruled by the British Parliament and monarch.
Dominions
A dominion was a country with a high level of self-government while remaining within the British ‘commonwealth’ of nations.
Economic migrants
People who move from one country to another, looking for higher wages and a better standard of living.
Brexit
Short for ‘Britain-Exit’ - leaving the EU.
United Nations
An international organisation that aims to maintain world peace through various organisations.
Asylum
The protection provided by a state to someone who has left their own country because of fear of persecution.
People smugglers
People who illegally smuggle refugees across country boundaries for money.
Interned
To hold someone prisoner, often for political reasons.
British Union of Fascists (BUF)
A British political party formed in 1932 by Oswald Mosley. The party’s Nazi-style anti-Semitism led to violent clashes with anti-fascists.
The National Front
A small, far-right political party with facist views that are opposed to immigration. it was founded in 1967.
Shadow cabinet
Key members of the opposition party, chosen to ‘shadow’ cabinet members of the government.
British National Party
A far-right fascist political party that was founded in 1982.
Decolonisation
The granting of independence to colonies.
Colour bar
Denying ethnic minority people access to the same rights and opportunities as white people. This particularly applies to jobs, recreation, housing and promotion.
Private prosecution
A criminal prosecution brought by a private individual or organisation, instead of a public prosecution by the crown.
