Chapter 4- Membrane Dynamics Flashcards
Metabolism
sum of all chemical reactions in the body
Hydrophilic
water loving, “heads” face internal and external cellular spaces
Hydrophobic
water fearing, “tails” lie internal to the plasma membrane
Aqueous
containing water, dissolved in water
Selectively permeable
the cell membrane has some control over what can cross it
Simple diffusion
movement of molecules from high to low without aid or energy expended
Passive
no additional energy required; occurs spontaneously (on its own)
Facilitated diffusion
movement of molecules from high to low with aid, but no energy expended
Active transport
movement of molecules from low to high, requires energy
ATP
Adenosine triphosphate, the major unit of cellular energy
Osmotic pressure
pressure that must be applied to prevent water movement
Isotonic
equal numbers of solutes/water on both sides of the membrane
Hypotonic
containing less solutes/more water on a particular side of the membrane
Hypertonic
containing more solutes/less water on a particular side of the membrane
