Chapter 4 - Mechanical Weathering: Frost Flashcards
1
Q
Where does Frost Weathering occur?
A
Occurs in areas where:
- temperatures frequently rise above and fall below freezing point
-precipitation is sufficient to provide plenty of water
Example: mountains of Ireland.
More severe Examples: The Alps and the Rocky Mountains
2
Q
What is Scree?
A
Pieces of rock which are broken off by this freeze, thaw , action and tumble down and collect in heaps.
3
Q
How can Frost weather rocks?
A
(Remember freeze, thaw, action)
1. The water collects in cracks in rocks
- Temperatures drop to 0 degrees Celsius by night, the water freezes. The water expands while frozen and widens the cracks and puts a strain on the rock
- Eventually freezing and thawing occur so frequently that the rock is gradually split and broken up
