Chapter 3 - An Inrtoduction To Weathering And Erosion Flashcards
Define weathering
Breaking down of rocks which lie exposed to the weather.
There are two types of weathering: mechanical and chemical.
Define erosion
The breaking down of rock and the carrying away of rock particles.
Caused by moving water (seas and rivers), moving ice and moving air (wind).
What is Mechanical weathering
Breaks up rocks into smaller pieces.
Main causes: frost, sudden temperature changes, plants and animals.
What is Chemical Weathering?
Causes rock to dissolve or decompose. It’s main cause is rain.
What is Deposition?
Materials that are carried away by the forces of erosion and are eventually *dropped (deposited) in other areas.
Define denudation
Wearing away of rocks by weathering and erosion.
