Chapter 4 Key Terms: Engine R&R Flashcards
Aftermarket
Automobile parts that are made by ‘other than original’ equipment manufacturers. (non-OEM)
Custom Engine Rebuild
When a complete engine is disassembled and rebuilt.
Freewheeling Engine (Non-interfering)
An engine that has enough piston-to-valve clearance.
Long Block
A long block is basically a short block but with cylinder heads. A long block typically has heads, camshaft, and a valve train.
R&R
Remove & Replace
Ring Ridge
A ridge that forms at the top of the cylinder as the cylinder wall wears.
When a ring Ridge is large enough to catch a finger nail, the engine is a candidate for a rebore and new oversized pistons and rings.
Short Blocks
A short block is like a bear block but it includes the connecting rod, pistons, and a crankshaft. Depending on the style of the engine it could also include a camshaft if it’s not a OHC.
Stock
The way an engine come from the factory.
Stock parts means the part is the same as intended by the original equipment manufacturer.
Stress Raiser
When the surface of a part is damaged, stress is raised in that area.
Thrust Bearing Surface
Bare Block
A bare block is the most strip down basic block. It has none of the internals so it doesn’t have any pistons, rods, or a crankshaft in it.
Complete Engine
A complete engine is a basic long block. Plus your fuel systems wiring, harnesses, and other accessories.
