Hypertrichosis
Stems from the Greek, hyper, meaning “over” and trichosis, meaning “hair” :an over abundance of hair.
Hirsutism (HER)
Terminal hair growth in women that is caused by excessive male androgens in the blood. Hair grows in adult male, sexual hair growth pattern. Usually caused by diseases and disorders of the endocrine system or stimulation of male androgens at puberty.
Syndrome
A group of symptoms, that when combined characterize a disease
Acromegaly
Disease affecting adults caused by the overproduction of growth, hormones; results in the enlargement of the bones of the hands, feet, jaw, nose, and ribs
Adrenogenital syndrome/Adrenal Virilism
Condition caused by the malfunctioning of the adrenal cortex, causing a block in cortisol synthesis and androgen over production
Virilism
Development of male secondary sex characteristics, considered unusual in woman culturally
Cortisol
Steroid hormone secreted by the adrenal glands in response to tissue damage; causes inflammation; also called Hydro Cortisone
Archard-Thiers syndrome
Rare syndrome caused by the combination of Cushing’s syndrome and adrenal genital syndrome; also called the diabetes of bearded women
Adrenocortical
Androgens produced by the cortex of the adrenal glands
Hyperglycemia
Abnormally, high level of sugar in the blood
Stein Leventhal syndrome/PCOS Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Disorder affecting women caused by androgen overproduction in the ovaries; presents varied outward signs, including hirsutism, and obesity
