Chapter 4 Intergumentary system Flashcards
skin
the largest organ of the body
- provides protection and regulates temperature.
- protects against microorganisms, UV light and extreme temperatures.
- is waterproof to keep pathogens away
epidermis
thin outer layer constructed mostly of non living keratenated cells
- water proof
- protection for deeper layers
- thickest on hands and feet
basement membrane
where new, living epidermis cells are produced
*eventually they rise to the top and become keratinized tissue
dermis
lies beneth epidermis and is much thicker
*made of fibrous connective tissue. contains elastin and collagen
subcutaneous layer
fat tissue and deep blood vessels, nerves, lower part of hair follicles, elastine, and collagen
*Provides insulation for deeper structures
sudoriferous (sweat) glands
also accessory structures of the skin
- sudoriferous glands are located throughout the body
- more concentrated on feet and hands
sebaceous oil glands
found at the base of hair follicles all over the body
*the oil secreted is called sebum.
laceration
a cut, tear in the flesh
abrasion
an area where skin or mucous membranes are scraped away.
* if tissue is irritated a natural imflammatory response causing the body to increase circulation and resulting into an edema
edema
swelling
erythema
redness
leukocytes
white blood cells
melanocytes
pigment producing cells
malanin
gives skin it’s colors.
*in the sun melanocytes produce more melanin to protect from sun damage
reflex
protective reflex
*when touching a hot surface, the reflexes will make you move your hand, before you can think about it.
hair shaft
- the visible part of the hair
- in the nose, ears, and head
- filters out the dust and debris from the air
Hair follicle
- the buried part in the skin
- contains the root
- made from the protein keratin. (gets its color from melanin)
- production of melaning is decreased with age
nails
protect fingers and toes
- forms in nail root
- made up of squamous epithelial cells
nail bed
are at the bae of the nail
lunula
also called half moon
*where new growth occurs
hair follicle
the burried part in the skin
- contains the root
- made from the protein called keratin
- gets its color from keratin
