Chapter 4- Immune System Flashcards
Antibodies
any of various proteins that are produced as a result of the presence of a foreign substance in the body and that act to neutralise or remove that substance
Antigen
substance that stimulates the production of antibodies
Adaptive immunity
is a subsystem of the overall immune system that is composed of highly specialized, systemic cells and processes that eliminate pathogens or prevent their growth.
Disease
any change that impairs the function of an individual in some way and causes harm to the individual
Infectious
a disease that is contagious (can be spread from one organism to another) and caused by a pathogen
Non infectious
a disease that cannot be spread from one organism to another
Pathogens
disease-producing organism
Microbes
a microorganism, especially a bacterium causing disease or fermentation.
Cellular pathogen
a pathogen that is made up of cells, such as a tapeworm, fungus or bacterium
Non Cellular Pathogens
pathogen that is not made up of cells, such as a virus, prion or viroid
Innate immunity
Natural or a born with immunity such as skin and phagocytes
Inflammation
reaction of the body to an infection, commonly characterised by heat, redness, swelling and pain
Phagocytosis
the ingestion of solid particles by a cell
Phagocytes
white blood cell that ingests and destroys foreign particles, bacteria and other cells
White Blood Cells
living cells that fight bacteria and viruses. They are part of the human body’s immune system.
