Chapter 4: How Fast? Flashcards
What four factors increase the rate of reaction?
Concentration, Temperature, surface area and pressure
Why does Concentration increase the rate of reaction?
The more molecules there are in a solution, the more likely collisions are to occur. The frequency of successful collisions is increased
Why does Temperature increase the rate of reaction?
Increases the kinetic energy of particles so more particles are above the activation energy that is needed for a reaction. Also, collisons are more frequent
Why does Pressure increase the rate of reaction?
A smaller volume for atoms to move around in means that they are forced closer together and collisions are more frequent.
Why does surface area increase the rate of reaction?
More of the substance is in contact with the solution, so more reactions can occur.
What is a catalyst?
A substance that speeds up a reaction, but stays chemically un-changed.
A reaction that emits heat energy is called…
An Exothermic Reaction (Heats up)
A reaction that takes in energy from it’s surroundings is called…
An Endothermic Reaction (Cools Down)
What does the double arrow symbol mean?
Reversible reaction
