Chapter 4- Energy Flashcards
What is the dissipation of energy
- When there is a change in a system energy is transferred and some of that energy is dissipated
- Dissipation is used to describe ways in which energy is wasted
- Any energy not transferred to useful energy stores is wasted because it is lost to the surroundings
What do heat light and sound do
They spread out (dissipate)
What happens when heat, light and sound spread out
It’s very difficult to gather the energy back together again which makes the energy become less useful and essentially wasted
How can you reduce energy loss
- reduce the amount of unwanted energy that is produced
- prevent energy from spreading out
How could you reduce friction and energy loss
Lubricate the parts that rub together
How can you prevent heat from dissipating (so that less heat will need to be produced to replace the heat that’s been lost)
By surrounding something with insulation
What does the effectiveness of insulation depend on
- how well the insulation conducts heat
How thick the insulation is
What is energy loss
When energy is transformed from one form to another, or moved from one place to another, or from one system to another there is energy loss
What is the efficiency of a system
It’s the proportion of energy they ends up in the intended form
