Chapter 4 Earth's History Flashcards
Fossil
Preserved remains or traces of living things
Mold
A hollow area in rock in the shape of an organism.
Cast
A solid copy of the shape of an organism.
Petrified fossil
Fossil in which minerals replace part of an organism.
Carbon film
Extremely thin layer of carbon on rock
Trace fossil
Evidence of an organism’s behavior (footprint, burrow, feces, etc.)
Preserved remains
Part or whole organism trapped in ice, tar, or tree sap.
Paleontologist
Scientist who studies fossils
Relative age
Age of rock related to other rock around it.
Absolute age
Actual age of a rock since it was formed
Law of Superposition
Scientific law stating that younger rock is above older rock.
Fault
Break in Earth’s crust
Index fossil
Fossil that is widespread and used to tell the relative ages of rock layers where they are found.
Radioactive decay
The breakdown of atoms as one element forms another element during decay.
Half-life
Time it takes for half of a radioactive element’s atoms to decay.
