Chapter 4: Drug interactions and Over-the Counter Drugs Flashcards
An altered or modified action or effect of a drug as a result of interaction with one or multiple drugs
Drug interaction
An undesirable drug effect that ranges from mild untoward effects to severe toxic effects
Adverse drug reaction
A chemical or physical reaction that occurs among two or more drugs in vitro
Drug incompatibility
Do hepatic enzyme inducers increase or decrease drug metabolism? What about hepatic enzyme inhibitors?
Enzyme inducers increase drug metabolism (less free drug), enzyme inhibitors increase drug amounts in the blood
What is the practice of checking serum drug levels, used primarily for drugs that have a narrow therapeutic range
Therapeutic drug monitoring
When two drugs with similar action are administered, what is the drug interaction called?
Additive effect
When two or more drugs are given together, one drug potentiates the other
Synergistic effect
When two drugs have opposite effects or cancel the effect of the other
Antagonistic effect
A drug induced skin rxn caused by exposure to sunlight
Photosensitivity
How may drug categories are there according to the FDA? What are the differences between the categories
three categories, cat 1 drugs are safe and effective, cat 2 are unsafe in a non-prescription format, cat 3 are drugs for which there is insufficient data to judge safety/efficacy
