Chapter 1:Drug Action Flashcards
Define pharmaceutic phase
The drug becomes a solution so it can cross the biologic membrane i.e. a pill dissolving
The dissolving of smaller particles in the GI fluid before absorption
Dissolution
The process of drug movement to achieve drug action
Pharmacokinetics
List 3 ways for drugs to be absorbed into the cell
Passive absorption/ Active absorption/ Pinocytosis
The percentage of the administered drug dose that reaches the systemic circulation
Bioavailability
The process by which the drug becomes available to body fluids and body tissues
Distribution
Drugs that are not bound to proteins
Free drugs (active and are what cause a response)
The process by which the body inactivates or biotransforms drugs
Metabolism
The time it takes to reach the minimum effective concentration after a drug is administered
Onset of action
When a drug reaches its highest blood or plasma concentration
Peak action
Drugs that affect various receptors
non-selective drugs
Drugs that block a response
antagonists
drugs that produce a response
agonists
The margin of safety of a drug analyzing the therapeutic dose compared to the lethal dose
Therapeutic index
The highest plasma concentration of a drug at a specific time
Peak drug level
