Chapter 4 - Consciousness Flashcards
What is blindsight?
What is inattentional /change blindness? Give an example.
What is subliminal perception?
Occurs when stimuli are processed by sensory systems but, because of their short durations or subtlety, do not reach consciousness. Messages that invoke emotion or motivation may subtly shift due to subliminal messages but such messages do not affect complex behaviors.
What is priming?
Exposure to a stimulus affects your later responses without your awareness of the connection
Describe the difference between endogenous and exogenous attention.
What are the characteristics of “flow”?
A particular kind of experience that is so engrossing and enjoyable [that it is] worth doing for its own sake even though it may have no consequence outside itself”
Ex: runner’s high, playing video games, etc.
Is it true that you can influence people’s behavior via hypnosis? Explain.
