Chapter 4 - Connective Tissues Flashcards
Fibroblasts
Produce & maintain the Extracellular matrix
Chondrocytes
Found in cartilage
Responsible for maintaining cartilage matrix
Osteocytes
Found in bone
Responsible for maintaining the bone matrix
Adipocytes
Store fat in adipose tissue
Macrophages & Mast Cells
Involved in immune response & inflammation
Connective Tissue Characteristics
Physical protection, support & structural framework, binding of structures, storage, transport, immune protection
Areolar connective tissue
Has fibroblasts
Function: packs around & binds organs
Located: surrounding nerves, vessels, & subcutaneous layer
Adipose connective tissue
Has Adipocytes
Function: protects, stores fat, insulates
Located: subcutaneous layer, surrounding kidneys, organs
Reticular connective tissue
Reticular fibers
Function:forms stroma of lymphatic organs
Located: stroma of spleen, liver, lymph nodes, bone marrow
Dense regular connective tissue
Collagen fibers
Function: provides strength & flexibility in one direction
Located: tendons & ligaments
Dense irregular connective tissue
Collagen fibers
Function: provide tensile strength in all directions
Located: dermis of skin, capsules of organs
Elastic connective tissue
Elastic & collagen fibers
Function: provides framework & supports organs
Located: walls of large arteries
