Chapter 4 : Chemical Compositions in a Cell Flashcards
1
Q
Name the 3 properties of water
A
- Polarity
- Cohesive & Adhesive force
- Specific heat capacity
2
Q
Explain polarity of water
A
- Water is an inorganic compound
- Water molecules are polar molecules. Because shared electrons between oxygen and hydrogen will attracted to oxygen becuz it’s more electronegative.
- This polarity produce hydrogen bonds and allows water to act as a universal solvent
3
Q
Explain cohesive force of water
A
- Water molecules attached to each other through cohesive force
4
Q
Explain adhesive force of water
A
- Water molecules attached to other surfaces through adhesive force
5
Q
Explain specific heat capacity of water
A
- 4.2 kJ kg-1 ‘C-1 <— specific heat capacity of water
- 4.2 kJ of energy is required to raise the temperature of 1kg of water by 1’C
6
Q
Types of carbohydrates (3 types)
A
- monosaccharides
- disaccharides
- polysaccharides
