chapter 4 - chemical bonding Flashcards
what is ionic bond ?
strong electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions
what is ionic bonding ?
process involving the transfer of electrons from the metal atom to the non-metal atom
what is ionic compound ?
made up of a metal ion , and a non-metal ion
what is covalent bond ?
a bond formed from sharing of electrons
what is covalent bonding ?
process involving the sharing of electrons between non-metal atoms
what is covalent compound ?
made up of at least two non-metal atoms
explain why ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points
ionic compounds have strong electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ion, heat energy is needed to overcome the strong forces of attraction
explain why ionic compounds are not able to conduct electricity in the solid state
there are no free mobile ions in the solid state as ions are held strongly in their fixed position by strong electrostatic forces of attraction.
explain why ionic compounds are able to conduct electricity in the aqueous and molten state
the electrostatic forces of attraction between the ions have been overcomed
