Chapter 4 and Chapter 5: Magma and Igneous rocks Flashcards
1
Q
What are Extrusive rocks vs intrusive rocks?
A
o Extrusive rocks are outside the surface of the earth. Intrusive rocks are inside the surface of the earth. Intrusive have larger grain sizes because it has longer to cool; it allows the crystals longer time to grow.
2
Q
- Intrusive coarse-grained igneous rocks:
A
felsic (granite), intermediate (diorite), mafic (gabbro), ultramafic (periodotite). Involve plutons because they are inside the surface.
3
Q
- Ultramafic is only found in intrusive rocks
A
Felsic rocks are found more around volcanos. Intermediate rocks are around subduction zone volcanoes. Mafic are involved around MORs.
4
Q
- Extrusive fine grained igneous rocks
A
felsic (rhyolite), intermediate (andesite), and mafic (basalt). Involve volcanos.
