Chapter 4 Acids and Redox Flashcards
What is an acid
a substance that donates protons (H+) when dissolved in water
Difference between strong and weak acids
a strong acid completely dissociates in aqueous solution. whereas a weak acid partially dissociates in aqueous solutions.
What is a base?
A base neutralises an acid to form a salt
What is an alkali?
a base that dissolves in water releasing hydroxide ions into the solution.
What is neutralisation
In neutralisation an acid, H+ ions react with a base to form a salt and neutral water. The H+ ions from the acid are replaced by metal or ammonium ions from the base.
Neutralisation of acids with metal oxides and hydroxides
acid + alkali = salt + water.
ionic equation
H+ + OH- = H2O
Neutralisation of acids with carbonates
Acids + metal carbonate = Salt + Water + CO2.
What is a titration? and what can they be used for?
is a technique used to accurately measure the volume of one solution that reacts exactly with another solution.
They can used for finding the concentration of a solution, identifying unknown chemicals, finding purity of a substance.
