Causes of Bacons Rebellion
The Virginia assembly disfranchised many homeless jobless men in 1670, sending them to the backcountry. Virginia Governor William Berkeley also refused to retaliate against Native American attacks, angering colonials.
Bacons Rebellion
Led by Nathaniel Bacon in 1676, Bacon and rebels massacred local Native Americans, then proceeded to chase Berkeley from Jamestown. Rebellion was supressed once Bacon died of disease.
Effects of Bacons Rebellion
Bacon had awoken the resentments of landless former servants, and put the frontiersmen against the plantation owners. Plantation owners turned to slaves in search of less troublesome laborers.
