Cells
Cells are the basic unit of life.
• Without cells, life cannot exist.
• Human body is comprised of ~1 trillion cells
• Cell theory states:
• (a) all living things are comprised of cells
• (b) new cells develop from other cells
• (c) cells are responsible for the structure & function
of living things
Central Nervous System (CNS)
is comprised of
the brain and the spinal cord
The brain has 3 components:
Cerebrum
• Cerebellum
• Spinal cord
Cerebrum
has two distinct sides, the right and left
hemispheres. The hemispheres of the cerebrum have four
lobes, frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital. Each lobe is
responsible in the processing and execution of certain
functions of the human organism
Frontal lobe
is located in the front of the cerebrum prior to the
central sulcus (Zemblin, 1988). It is responsible for planning/sequencing
(motor skills), higher lever cognition (reasoning, making judgment),
expressive language.
Parietal lobe
is section of cerebrum that is located after the
central sulcus. This lobe is responsible for processing
information received through the senses.
Occipital lobe
which is located in the posterior (back) of
the cerebrum, is responsible for visual perception and
processing.
Temporal lobe
is located on both sides of the cerebrum.
Responsible for perception & processing of auditory stimuli
and comprehension.
Cerebellum
is posterior section of brain that is above
brainstem.
Responsible for balance & coordination of movements within
body.
Dendrites
transmit information received towards the soma.
Myelin sheath
encloses the axon.
Axon
transmits information away from the soma, which is the cell’s
body.
synapse
• Transmission of this information occurs through electrical impulses
