Chapter 4 Flashcards
The proportion of times the outcome would occur in a very long series of repetitions.
Probability
The outcome of a new trial that is not influenced by the result of the previous.
Independent event.
When you replace the variable after each trial.
Sampling With Replacement
Symbol for # of trials.
n
Symbol for outcome.
X
Equation for relative frequency of X.
n
Two events that have no outcomes in common and can never happen together.
Disjoint.
The event that A does not occur, written as Ac.
Complement.
Some combination of two or more simple events.
Compound event.
Can’t reduce or make any more fundamental than you’ve already done.
Simple event.
P(A and B) = P(A)P(B)
Multiplication rule for independent events.
P(A or B or C) = P(A) + P(B) +P(C)
Additional rule for Disjoint events.
P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A and B)
General addition rule for any two events.
Reflect how the P of an event can change if we know that some other event has occurred.
Conditional Probabilities.
P(A/B) = P(A and B) // P(A)
Equation for conditional probability.
