Chapter 4 Flashcards
Matter/ Trace element
Takes up space/ has mass
Trace element= iron
Element
Type of matter, everything is made up of it ; cannot be broken down
4 Vital Elements of Life are
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Nitrogen
Structure of an atom (where are the three placed)
Proton= placed in the nucleus Neutron= placed in the nucleus Electron= orbits the nucleus
What are the three’s electrical charges
Pro= positive Neu= neutral Elec= negative
How many bonds do Hydrogen, Carbon, Oxygen, and Nitrogen have each
Hydro= 1 bond Carbo= 4 bond Oxy= 2 bond Nitro= 3 bond
Isotope
Changing the numbers of protons(A#). They are useful because they use radioactive things to help you.
Ionic/ Covalent
Occurs when atoms transfer electrons
Forms when two atoms share an electron
Reactants/ Chemical Reactions
Starting material for a chemical reaction
Material created as a result of Chemical Reaction
How to tell the bond number
By using the atomic minus 8
Unique properties of water
That electrons are not shared equally between ox/ hydrogen
Solutions Aqueous Solutions
Uniform mixture of two or more substances
Solution in which water is the solvent
Solvents/ Solutes
Substance in a solution that dissolves substance/ is present in greater amount
Substance in a solution that is dissolved/ is present in lesser amount
pH scale
Describes how acidic and basic a solution is
Acid/ Base
Compound that donates H+ ions to an aqueous solution
Compound that removes H+ ions from an aqueous solution
Neutral Compounds/ Buffers
Having neither acid or basic properties
Substance that causes a solution to resist changes in pH
